EXTRACTS FROM BOOK 2
OVER 25 DIFFERENT
WAYS/MEANS GOD USES
TO TALK TO HIS PEOPLE
Our
God is a God of wonders. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and
all the things that are in them. Therefore, He has absolute right and freedom
to use anyone or anything He wants, to talk to us. He is not tied to a
particular way or means or method. But He is a God of varieties. He talks to
His people in different ways using different means. He too makes this clear in His
word.
“And
the Lord came down in the pillar of cloud, and stood in the door of the
tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam and they both came forth”.
“And
He (God) said, Hear now my word; if there be a prophet among you, I the Lord
will make myself known unto him in a vision, and I will speak unto him
in a dream.
“My
servant Moses is not so who is faithful in all mine house”.
“With
him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark
speeches….” (Numbers 12:5-8).
The
words underlined above are some of the means that God uses to talk to His
people. Now let us examine them and others one by one.
1.
Vision:
This
is the first means God mentions in the passage above. However, this does not
mean it is superior to others.
Now
what is vision? This is the revelation one receives from God especially when
one is in a conscious state. It usually involves the use of the outer eyes.
Here the person is not sleeping; he is awake and is conscious of what is going
on, only that such a person cannot control the event as it goes on. Look at
what Balaam said here…
He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision
of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
- Numbers 24:4;
Read
also 2 Samuel 7:17; Ezekiel 8:4.
Vision
may be divided into two major categories; there is one called an open vision.
Then there is another one which I will like to call direct vision.
a. Open Vision: If
a person is under the influence of open vision, when he looks at somebody, he
will be seeing a different thing entirely. He will be able to see into the
spiritual realm; he sees beyond the physical and sees the other person exactly
as he or she is. This is an open vision. It is visible only to the one seeing
it.
b. Direct Vision: This
occurs when you are able to see things in the spirit realm as they happen just
as if you are watching it from a screen or a television set. Direct vision is
just like you are seeing pictures of things as they happen beyond the physical
world.
See
Ezekiel 8:4,
And,
behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that
I saw in the plain
It is the promise of God that
we will see vision, Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17
Note: In the Bible, 21 people
had vision, we shall see them soon.
2. Dreams:
God
also uses dream as a means of talking to His people. In dream, the person may
be said to be in subconscious state, since it happens when one is sleeping. Read
Genesis 20:3-6; Matthew 1:20; 2:13,19
“In a dream … when
deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumbering upon the bed; then he openeth the
ears of men and sealeth their instruction”
(Job 33:15, 16).
Note: There are 14 dreamers in the
Bible and a total of 34 dreams.
4. Trance:
Trance is
another means God uses to communicate to His people. Trance is somehow similar
to the open vision, though they are different. The difference is this: Trance
usually comes all of a sudden – one will see something suddenly in a snap, it
usually appears as if one is dozing as one receives the revelation, for
example, at the time that one is praying,
Another
thing about trance is that the revelation may not concern the area you are
praying on. It may be for somebody else or about something.
“... Peter
went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour…. He fell into a trance,
and saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him…. And there
came a voice to him….”
(Acts 10:9-13)
Note:
Only 3 people had trances in the Scriptures:
i.
Balaam (Numbers 24:4)
ii.
Peter (Acts 10:10;
11:5)
iii.
Paul (Acts 22:17)
Essentially
trances are one of the four common ways that God manifests in a vision. They
are as follows:
i.
Inner
Vision: This refers to the picture you see in
your inner man, or spirit man, maybe as you are praying or meditating.
ii. Open Vision: This is the vision that comes when your eyes are wide open.
iii. Night Vision: This is a vision that comes in form of a dream.
iv. Trance Vision: In this type of vision, God freezes all natural abilities in order to talk with the person. When people go into trance they become unconscious of their environment. Many a time, people who went into trance had seen both heaven and hell. At some other time, it appears suddenly as if when one dozes off.
DREAM, VISION AND
TRANCE – Differences
Let
us here explain each of these means by which God talks to His people for more
clarity. This will help us to know how each one differs from the other. Not
only this, it will also help us to know, accept and understand that it is God
that is talking to us whenever we experience any of the three.
Summarily,
Dream: Dream
occurs when you are sleeping, and
you are also in subconscious state.
you are also in subconscious state.
Vision: Vision occurs when you are awake, and you
are in a conscious/unconscious state.
Trance: Trance is a sudden revelation from God, it may appear at the time that looks as if you are dozing. But many times God uses it He suspends natural abilities in order to communicate well with the person.
Having
pointed out these differences, let us move on to the other means by which God
talks to His people.
5. Dark Speeches:
God can talk
to you in dark speeches, that is, in not too clear terms e.g. in parables,
analogies, deep things, circumstances, comparisons, etc. in other words, God
can speak to you in a coded language. Therefore, you need someone more
knowledgeable, more spiritual and more experienced than you in the things of
God to decode the message.
Unfortunately not many people possess
this ability to interpret (decode) dark speeches.
“If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his righteousness”
(Job 33:23)
“Neither
is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both”
(Job 9:33)
It is God’s Spirit that helps us in this
situation – see 1 Corinthians 2:10.
6. Inner Voice:
God also uses the inner voice to
talk to His people. When God uses it, one will feel some kind of inner witness
inside one. You might have had the experience sometime when you felt like this,
“something is telling me in my mind
that....” “something told me this thing would happen before but I didn’t
believe it” and so on. This is the inner voice. Hear this prophet’s
confession…
